Connector Programs in Economic Development Organizations

June 2, 2025

As we’ve shared before the Connector Program is a simple yet highly effective networking program that puts immigrants directly in touch with local business people, civil servants and community leaders – people who are in the habit of making introductions and connecting others to opportunities.

In our last blog, we covered how our Connector programs are used by Immigrant Serving Organizations to positively impact the community as part of their services offered. In this post, we’ll explore how the program is used by Economic Development organizations, including Chambers of Commerce.

You might be thinking, how does this fit into economic development? The reason is simple: when newcomers thrive where they choose to settle, everyone benefits.

Economic Development Organizations (an entity that focuses on improving the economic well-being of a specific region) and Chambers of Commerce (a local association to promote and protect the interests of the business community in a particular place) use the program primarily for workforce development projects and labour market programs. These programs help people build the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the workforce. This benefits everyone because it creates a skilled and competitive workforce. They also identify workforce needs and help develop policies to promote and support economic growth. For these organizations, the Connector Program fits perfectly as a final step to connect talent with opportunity.

Economic Development Organizations and Chambers of Commerce also have strong business ties – so they usually have a steady stream of people ready to engage in the program as Connectors. Understanding the needs and gaps that can be filled with newcomers, allows them to advocate for people to use their skills and expertise to develop the local economy. They then must partner and develop strong ties with Immigrant Serving Organizations to create pathways to find and assist Connectees. These partnerships create stronger linkages between newcomers and business, while allowing economic development organizations to have an even deeper understanding of the workforce potential in their community.

No matter where the Connector Program is housed, the local community, economy, and newcomers all benefit. In each case, strong partnerships are key to success. In each case, organizations and the private sector need to work together to ensure that newcomers can establish themselves and use their education, skills, and expertise.

Ultimately, the Connector Program acts as the bridge between newcomers and business. One introduction is all it takes to change lives and create stronger communities.
