Provincial Labour Standards
Across Canada, there are standards and codes to ensure you have fair and equitable conditions of employment. Canada is a federation, thus the rules and standards differ from province to province, and activity to activity.
Some professions are covered under the Canada Labour Code, because they occur across the country. They are:
- Interprovincial and international services such as:
- Railways
- Highway transport
- Telephone, telegraph, and cable systems
- Pipelines
- Canals
- Ferries, tunnels, and bridges
- Shipping and shipping services
- Radio and television broadcasting, including cablevision;
- Air transport, aircraft operations, and aerodromes;
- Banks;
- Undertakings for the protections and preservation of fisheries as a natural resources; and
- Undertakings declared by Parliament to be for the general advantage of Canada

Make sure, before starting employment anywhere in Canada, that you read the Labour Standards Act that governs your province, territory, or position, as well as the policy document of your employer.
